Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
Outline of the Organisation
The ACCC is Australia’s national competition, consumer and fair trading regulator. We are an independent Commonwealth statutory authority responsible for administering and enforcing the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.
The ACCC works to promote competition, fair trading and consumer protection to benefit consumers, businesses and the broader community. For small businesses, we provide guidance to help them understand their rights and obligations, avoid common compliance risks, and operate confidently in competitive markets. Our role includes addressing anti-competitive conduct, unfair contract terms, misleading or deceptive conduct, and other practices that may harm businesses or consumers.
In addition to compliance and enforcement activities, the ACCC places strong emphasis on education and engagement. We develop practical resources, tools and guidance tailored for small businesses, and collaborate with industry bodies, government agencies and business support organisations to improve awareness of competition and consumer law.
Through proactive engagement, outreach activities and accessible information, the ACCC aims to support small businesses to thrive while ensuring markets remain fair, transparent and competitive across Australia, including in regional communities such as Tasmania.
Value / Support Offered to Small BusinEsses
The ACCC provides practical, accessible support to help small businesses understand and comply with competition and consumer laws, reducing risk and building confidence in day-to-day operations.
We provide information on key areas such as unfair contract terms, consumer guarantees, advertising and pricing practices, and how businesses can protect themselves from scams. We will also make available a range of ACCC resources and materials, directing business owners to the tools and guidance on our website that educate them about their rights and responsibilities when running their business.
