Rural Business Tasmania

Outline of the Organisation

Rural Business Tasmania (RBT) is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers business support services to small businesses, entrepreneurs and primary producers across Tasmania. The organisation focuses on strengthening the capability of people operating in regional and rural communities by providing practical, accessible business advice and support.

RBT delivers a range of advisory programs funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, including the Tasmanian Business Advice Service (TBAS) and the New Business Support Pilot Program (NBS). Through these initiatives, experienced advisors provide one-on-one guidance to people starting a business, developing new ideas, or seeking to improve an existing enterprise.

In addition to small business advisory services, RBT also delivers the Rural Financial Counselling Service Tasmania, which provides free and confidential support to farmers and small rural businesses facing financial difficulty.

Through these programs, Rural Business Tasmania plays an important role in supporting entrepreneurship, strengthening small business capability and contributing to the economic resilience of regional communities across Tasmania.

Value / Support Offered to Small Businesses

Rural Business Tasmania provides practical, independent advice to help Tasmanian small businesses make informed decisions and build sustainable operations. Advisors work directly with business owners and people considering self-employment to provide tailored guidance based on their individual circumstances.

Support commonly includes testing new business ideas, developing business plans, understanding startup requirements, pricing products and services, managing cash flow, and improving financial management. Advisors also assist existing businesses to review performance, identify opportunities to improve profitability, and address operational challenges.

Importantly, RBT provides a supportive environment where business owners can discuss ideas, challenges and decisions with an experienced advisor who understands the realities of running a small business in Tasmania.

By focusing on practical advice and clear next steps, Rural Business Tasmania helps reduce risk for new businesses, strengthen existing enterprises, and support the long-term sustainability of small businesses throughout the state.
